Pictures of the Month / Adalmina Ollanketo: A Northern Fairytale
05.08.2019 - 01.09.2019
Images by Oulu-based photographer Adalmina Ollanketo (b. 1995) tell a dream-like story of the northern nature. Wild birds are inches away from the viewer and it seems as if they were consciously posing. A Grim blood moon is shining over the wintry treetops.
Ollanketo uses focus stacking to edit her photos into multileveled worlds where everyday elements of nature create magical combinations. Her images are not purely nature photography but more of story telling.
Ollanketo mostly photographs at night-time. “Nature is different at that time of the day,” she describes her photographic journeys into the heart of the night. Urban sounds are replaced by the chirping of nocturnal birds, and signs of human activity disappear for hours at a time. The light green or reddish light of Finnish summer nights is an element often present in her photos.
In addition to nature, Ollanketo photographs pets, portraits, and events. Ollanketo has been actively taking pictures for more than ten years. She has graduated as a media assistant.
