Pictures of The Month/ Anastasia Leonova: Kintsugi

29.05.2017 - 16.07.2017

"The Pictures of The Month" spring program is wrapped up with the exhibition "Kintsugi" by Anastasia Leonova.

"I am Anastasia Leonova, a 27-year-old woman born in Russia. I have nevertheless lived in Finland for the most of my life. Before I moved to Oulu, I have lived also in Joensuu and Rauma. I got familiar with photography about seven years ago, when a friend was mine was studying the field and asked me to model in photographs. That was the moment when I knew I wanted to go to the other side of the camera as well! I went to study to the same school with my friend, and even though my title is media assistant, I fell like I’m truly a photographer, because photography is very close to my heart!

This Kintsugi exhibition has a special meaning for me, because it is based on the pictures from my previous exhibition, in which the photos were quite seriously damaged. After the exhibition I was not able to throw the pictures away, but I remembered that I heard abut this Japanese phenomenon or philosophy where the Japanese fix dishes with gold or golden powder in order to highlight the “scars” of the dishes. Because the photographs started to have a sort of a story and a history of their own, I started to see them a little different than just paper. The photographs were seeing things I was not witnessing myself, they saw people looking at them, and they saw the closed library during the nighttime.

I gave the pictures a second chance. I don’t want to hide the scars they have. Let them proudly present!"
