Pictures of the Month / Iiro Kerkelä: Downhill
07.01.2020 - 09.02.2020
”In its best downhill skiing and especially freeriding is a combination of total freedom, accepting your smallness and even facing your fears. The ecstatic feeling of riding is often accompanied by an undertone of insecurity, which is something that you just have to admit to yourself.
When you’re freeriding you’re truly present, isolated from the rest of the world. Even the best rides or days or riding might not leave anything else behind but a few glimpses of memories and the joy.”
Iiro Kerkelä (b. 1989) is a Rovaniemi based photographer and journalist. He has taken the images in the exhibition between 2018 and 2019 in Finland in Vuokatti, Kemijärvi, Pyhätunturi and Kilpisjärvi and in Japan.
