Open search for northern Finnish artists - Material Light
Finnish Light Art Society FLASH, Northern Photographic Center and the Artists' Association MUU are organizing the second part of the event Material Light at the Northern Photographic Center in Oulu in November 2021. The event focuses on light art in it´s many forms. The exhibition is also part of the LUMO light festival.
We invite northern Finnish artists from Northern Ostrobothnia, Kainuu and Lapland to propose an art work with the Material Light theme. The artist must live in the area or have a strong connection to Northern Finland.
How does light itself feel, what does it mean, tell and convey in an artwork? Artists from various fields, from performance artists to painters, from video artists to light artists, and from sculptors to sound artists, are welcome. The theme can be approached on many different levels, from concrete light as material to it's more conceptual treatment.
We are also interested in ideas for an online or virtual light art work. Can a light art work be viewed online, is it possible to send it from one computer to another, or sense it from a cell phone screen?
In connection to the exhibition, artists will also be offered a residency in the AiR Oulu residency program for 1-3 weeks. The residency is free of charge for the artist, and in addition, the Northern Photography Center reimburses the artist for reasonable travel expenses incurred in participating in the residency program. 1-2 artists will be selected for the residency program. The Northern Photography Center also provides mentoring support for artists selected. The residence apartment is located in the center of Oulu and can be accommodated alone or as a group of two people. The program also provides the artist with a workspace.
The exhibition will be held at the Oulu Northern Photographic Center from November 20, 2021 to January 2, 2022. We are building the exhibition on November 16-19, 2021. The opening will be held on Friday, November 19, 2021 at 5 pm.
The Northern Photographic Center has to offer AV-technology to the artists participating in the exhibition: 3 HD projectors, 3 audio players, 4 media players.
We hope that the artists will obtain other necessary materials and equipment themselves. Artists will be paid an exhibition fee of 400.00 for participating in the exhibition.
The artists of the first part of the exhibition are Alexander Salvesen (1990), Jenni Eskola (1982), Michal Czinege (1980), Anna Björklund (1991), Oulu-based Heidi Stålnacke (1980) and the Artists' Collective KUNST. The artists are also involved in the second part of the project. The event is curated by visual artist Anu Raatikainen.
