Call for exhibition program 2018 open now!

The gallery of the Northern Photographic Centre is located at Cultural Centre Valve in the centre of Oulu. There are more than 45000 visitors in the gallery every year. The gallery has seven rooms with walls of stone, floor of red bricks and works are hung with strings (no drilling/nailing). Two rooms are equipped with a video projector and a screen for exhibiting video works. The space is suitable also for group exhibitions.

Submissions should be sent Sunday 3.9.2017 the latest to the address submissions(at) 

Submission is sent as one pdf file.

Submissions should be named after the applicant. The maximum size of the document is 10MB. Submissions arrived in other forms are not taken into consideration.


The submission document should include

1. Exhibition plan with sizes and materials of the works. Please mind the string hanging system used in the gallery.

2. Pictures of the works as well as installation pictures if available.

3. CV


Exhibition fee is 700€ for domestic exhibitions. The fee covers the opening expenses, exhibition insurances and domestic transportation  as well as marketing and promotion.  Domestic travels and accommodation during the opening are also covered.

Pohjoinen Kohtaaminen / Northern Encounters: the artists of the Northern Finland regional photographic art exhibition have been chosen

The artists and art works for the Northern Finland regional photographic art exhibition Pohjoinen Kohtaaminen (Northern Encounters) have been chosen. The exhibition has been juried by Gunilla Muhr, the head of the Art Department of University College of Arts, Craft and Design, Konstfack in Stockholm, together with the director Alla Räisänen and producer Julia Heikkinen from The Northern Photographic Centre.

The call was open for all photographers living and working in the North, as well as for all artists dealing with the theme and concept of the North in their works. 59 applications with 70 proposals were received. The most applications came from Northern Finland but also from other parts of Finland and from Europe as well.

Pohjoinen Kohtaaminen (Northern Encounters) opens in the galleries of The Northern Photographic Centre and Cultural Center Valve on Fri 22th September at 17.00.

The exhibition is a part of the 30th anniversary program of The Northern Photographic Centre as well as a part of Finland 100 years anniversary program.

The Northern Photographic centre is supported by the city of Oulu and Arts Promotion Center Finland.

Open call for Northern Finland regional photographic art exhibition 2017

The Northern Photographic Centre turns 30 years in 2017 and to celebrate the anniversary the centre recreates the Northern Finland regional Photographic art exhibition. The exhibition will be held in Oulu, at Cultural Centre Valve during 23.9. -12.11.2017 The exhibition will take over the exhibition spaces of Valve (the galleries of The Northern Photographic Centre and Valve gallery.).

Gunilla Muhr, a curator and the director of Centrum För Fotografi in Stockholm has been invited to the jury the exhibition together with the director and producer of The Northern Photographic Centre, Alla Räisänen and Julia Heikkinen . The exhibition is a part of the national Finland 100 years–program.

The theme and the name of the exhibition is Pohjoinen Kohtaaminen (Northern Encounters). The call is open for all photographers (artists, nature photographers, documentarists, photo journalists etc.) living or working in Northern Finland, as well as actors dealing with the concept and theme of North in their works.

Proposals of works for the exhibition should consist of series of 5-10 works that express the theme of the exhibition. Applicants can propose one or more series, and series can also consist of photos from different periods of time.  Proposals can be made as a group as well. Photographs, video works and works based on photographs can be proposed. The exhibition organiser can reduce the amount of works in the series if necessary.

The proposals should be sent to as one Pdf document by 31.3.2017.

The proposal should include

-Pictures of the works in the series and if possible the names of the works, technique, year of production and sizes.

-A description of exhibiting the works, if the wire hanging system of the exhibition spaces can not be used.

-Contacts and cvs of the applicant(s).

The works selected to the exhibition should be delivered ready-to-hang to The Northern Photographic Centre. Deliveries will be scheduled with the selected applicants separately. The makers are responsible for all production and transportation costs of the works. The works are insured by The Northern Photographic centre during the exhibition.

The vernissage of the exhibition takes place on Friday 22nd of September 5pm-7pm.
