Exhibition programme 2020 has been selected

The open call for Northern Photographic Centre’s exhibition programme attracted artists from all around the world. A total of 71 applications was received.


The following artists and exhibitions have been chosen to The Northern Photographic Centre's exhibition programme 2020:

Exceptions to Gallery opening hours

On Fri 4 Oct and Sat 5 Oct Cultural House Valve and the galleries of Northern photographic centre will already close at 7.30 PM.


Open call for exhibitions 2020

The call for exhibitions in Northern Photographic Centre in 2020 is open until 30 September 2019.

The gallery of the Northern Photographic Centre is located at Cultural Centre Valve in the centre of Oulu. More than 35000 visitors see our exhibitions each year. The gallery has seven rooms and works are hung with a string system. Two rooms are equipped with a video projector and a screen for exhibiting video works. The space is suitable also for group exhibitions.


The submission document should include

  1. Exhibition plan with an exhibition statement.
  2. Pictures of the works as well as installation pictures if available. List the sizes and materials of the works. Please mind the string hanging system used in the gallery (the use of nails or drilling is not allowed).
  3. CV


Send your submission in one pdf-file to The file should be named after the applicant and should not exceed the size of 8MB. The deadline for applications is 30.9.2019. Submissions that do not meet the rules above are not taken into consideration.


Northern Photographic Centre covers the opening expenses, exhibition insurances and domestic transportation as well as marketing and promotion.  Domestic travels and accommodation for the artist to attend the opening are also covered.  Terms with international artists are negotiated separately. A stipend of 469 euros  per exhibition (includes VAT 24 %) is paid to the artists.

Pictures of the Month fall 2019 is opened with Adalmina Ollanketo's exhibition A Northern Fairytale.

Pictures of the Month programme has been selected

The programme starts at the end of May with Leena Holmström’s Meaningless moments. The other selected photographers are Adalmina Ollanketo, Anssi Jokiranta, Heikki Annala, Jaana Haapaluoma-Höglund, Marcos Katz, Iiro Kerkelä, Riitta Attila, Linda Sainio and Anu Tossavainen.


A versatile selection of exhibitions by both professional and amateur photographers will colour the walls of our Lobby Gallery. The programme will consist of nature, sports, street and portrait photography. Black and white photos and colour images are shown and different kind of printing methods are also showcased. The themes of the projects vary from nature relation and sustainable development to femininity, multicultural communication and love.

Spring and summer holidays affect our opening hours.

Board 2019 has been selected

The board of Northern Photographic Centre for 2019 has been selected.

Photographic artist Kati Leinonen will continue as the chairwoman of the association. Juuso Haarala, Paavo Heinonen, Sanna Krook, Antti Leinonen and Vesa Ranta will continue as board members. Joel Karppanen was selected as a new board member as Mikko Törmänen decided to step aside. Northern Photographic Centre would like to thank Mikko for his years as an active board member.


Submit your works for Pictures of the Month program

The call for Pictures of the Month program is now open. Submit your works before April 22nd.


Four week exhibition slots are available free of charge in our Lobby Gallery in Cultural house Valve between June 2019 and February 2020. The call is open for both professional and amateur photographers.

The exhibition space has a wire hanging system. There is camera surveillance in the exhibition space. The exhibiting artist is responsible for the possible costs of the exhibition. Northern Photographic Centre provides the exhibition space free of charge and provides the artist help in planning, hanging and marketing the exhibition.

The deadline for applying is April 22nd 2019. Send your application as one PDF file to . The application should include an exhibition plan, an artistic resume and images of the submitted photographs.
