Northern Photographic Centre and Street Level Photoworks Artist Residency

Visit Scotland’s ‘Year of Coast and Waters 2021’ celebrates and shines a spotlight on Scotland’s beautiful natural environment. Nature is gaining a momentum with people expressing a desire to experience rural and especially coastal destinations. However, at the same time, temperatures are soaring and storms are raging. According to the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference, to be held in Glasgow in November 2021, if we do not act quickly, every single one of us will be affected. Northern Photographic Centre in collaboration with Street Level Photoworks are inviting artists to react to the urgent global climate situation and engage Scotland’s natural environment in a responsible way.

This open call to photographers or artists working with photography residing in Finland is for a 35-day residency which will take place in Glasgow and the surrounding areas provisionally between September and October of 2021, but if travel restrictions due to COVID-19 circumstances remain in place the residency will be rescheduled to 2022. Through this programme Northern Photographic Centre and Street Level Photoworks are opening up opportunities to explore, amongst other things, contemporary cultural and economic links, landscape, coast and water, remoteness, as well as environmental interdependence.

The residency is aimed at artists who identify with the North and aforementioned themes, are from Northern Finland, or have a strong connection to Northern Finland. The residency is supported by Northern Photographic Centre, Street Level Photoworks, and Finnish Institute in the UK and Ireland.

Residency Structure

This opportunity includes a funded 35-day stay for one photographic artist/photographer residing in Finland to Glasgow through Northern Photographic Centre and Street Level Photoworks (SLP). SLP will facilitate the residency in Glasgow and provide the necessary professional and creative support.

The artist is expected to deliver at least two public talks as part of their residency stay. It is hoped that work arising from the residency will be developed in exhibition outcomes that may be considered for SLP’s exhibition programmme in the future.

As well as creating a space for ideas, there is an expectation that part of the exchange residency involves networking and meetings of introduction with others in the photography sector of the host country in order to help enlarge awareness of artistic practice around photography in Finland and Scotland.

Dates for artist residing in Finland in Glasgow: for 35-days between September and October 2021, though these dates may be subject to change depending on COVID-19 circumstances.
NOTE! In line with our environmental policy, we recommend that land and sea are used for travel. Therefore, an additional 3 days are added to the travel aspects on either end and are considered an intrinsic part of the residency. Street Level Photoworks and Northern Photographic Centre can advise further.
