After the summer’s Anticipation and Crush Diary exhibitions, there will be two exhibitions by Swedish artists in Photo North’s galleries. In September at the main gallery, we will see Ellen Eurenius Hallgren‘s exhibition Threads, which explores how to work with images during a time of political exhaustion, when the flow of information, opinions, and images is accelerating. In Hallgren’s exhibition, different realities meet in an imaginative atmosphere that slips between authenticity and fantasy. Some stories emerge while others are hidden. Interwoven materials in the exhibition open up new narratives.
At the same time, Emil Andersson‘s exhibition The Food will open in the Foyer gallery. The exhibition depicts the artist’s trip to southern Spain ten years ago, where the photographs taken are mixed with the tensions and paradoxes the artist experienced on site regarding land ownership, immigration and tourism.
Towards the end of the year, the galleries will be filled with themes of grief and loss. At the end of October, Leena Ylä-Lyly‘s Takotsubo will open in the main gallery. The exhibition, named after the Japanese name for broken heart syndrome, focuses on encountering, presence and the alleviation of suffering. Through visually stripped-down images, the gallery space becomes a peaceful space in which to examine one’s emotions in a focused manner.
As a counterpart to loss and grief, we see Katri Heinämäki‘s exhibition Traces of an Absent Past in the lobby gallery. The exhibition deals with family photos that have become collectibles and flea market finds, which are examined using an experimental working method. The artist’s material is slides from the 50s–80s acquired from American buying and selling events, and the work focuses on the materiality of the analog image and the circulation of photographs. The work comments on the personal nature of images, their transience over time, and the identification that transcends cultures and decades; family dynamics and the rites of humanity from birth to death.
