Photo North – The Pohjoisen photo center’s gallery is located on the first floor of Kulttuuritalo Valvei. More than 35,000 visitors visit the gallery every year and the gallery is open every day from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The gallery has seven rooms and its total area is about 135 m2. The premises have stone walls and a red brick floor. Two rooms have a screen and a video cannon for showing video works. The gallery space is also well suited for work group exhibitions. Photo North – North Photo Center offers the public free guided tours on request on weekdays from 10 am to 5 pm. In addition, PVK’s gallery participates in the monthly guided exhibition tour at Kulttuuritalo Valve. When the artist is present, he is paid a compensation of €60.
The lobby gallery is located in front of the entrance to the Photo North – Pohjoisen photo center office at the entrance to the Ojankatu side of the Kulttuuritalo Valve. The “Pictures of the Month” program nimbly presents the debut exhibitions of budding photographers. We look for exhibitions every year through an open search, follow our news section.
The pictures of the month software is part of the collaboration between Photo North and Fotonordic.
The exhibitions are selected based on an open call and curated by the curators. The gallery’s exhibition application is open to all professionally active artists and to various forms of contemporary art. Aulagalleria’s exhibition software presents the debut exhibitions of budding photographers with agility. Working groups and curators can also apply with ready-made exhibition concepts. Exhibition proposals are requested to link to photography or lens-based art. Exhibition applications are submitted using an electronic form.
The length of the exhibition period is eight (8) weeks. The hanging is done during the exhibition’s opening week, and the opening is generally held on the Friday before the exhibition’s first opening day. Dismantling takes place on the Monday after the last exhibition day. The gallery is closed in July.
PVK does not charge rent for exhibitions. In addition, the center organizes the round-trip transport of the gallery’s exhibition works, the insurance of the works for the duration of the transport and the exhibition, travel and accommodation expenses for the opening of the exhibition, information and the opening. In 2024, PVK will cover the exhibition costs of the lobby gallery up to €150.
Exhibition time is requested using an electronic form via Google Forms. With one application, you can apply for either the gallery space or the lobby gallery. You cannot alternatively apply for either exhibition space with the same application.
As an attachment to the electronic form, a clear and free-form exhibition application must be sent as a single file, which includes the following parts:
– exhibition plan (exhibition theme and/or idea)
– curriculum vitae (artist groups attach each artist’s cv)
– image and text samples, as well as images from previous productions, that support the entire exhibition as well as possible.
Photo North – Northern Photo Center encourages applicants to offer a wide range of works challenging the medium of photography and based on lens-based media, which are fresh or current. Utilization of the space as part of the exhibition is considered an advantage. If the exhibition proposal contains a moving image, it is hoped that the application will contain links to work samples or the entire work, which must be viewable via the internet (e.g. Vimeo, Youtube). All exhibition proposals are evaluated confidentially and incomplete applications are not evaluated.
Applications are processed by a 3-5 member exhibition committee, which consists of PVK’s board and staff members. In addition, a rotating expert member can be invited to the exhibition committee. All applicants will be notified personally of the exhibition committee’s decision by e-mail or text message no later than two months (2 months) from the end of the exhibition application.
