As part of the Adaptation project, Photo North – Northern Photographic Centre has invited artist Jaakko Myyri to participate in an artist residency at Oulanka Research Station during the winter of 2026. The residency program is part of Photo North’s Oulu2026 European Capital of Culture project, Adaptation. Jaakko Myyri (b. 1991, Oulu) is an artist living and working in the Netherlands, whose practice explores the intersections of identity and the environment.
In his sculptural and code-based works, language acts as a propellant for responding to system degradation—moving beyond technological critique toward alternative modes of tool-building and subject formation. He uses tools such as machine learning and defunct automated devices like industrial air cooling systems to produce sculptures and immersive installations. In his recent work, Dweller Model (2025), developed in collaboration with Dr. Alfonso Borragán, Myyri has used artificial neural networks trained on climate change datasets to produce an ASMR apparatus of real-time climate predictions. He transformed this data into a dialogue that inquires into materiality and the potentials of cohabitation with nonhuman others.

During the residency, at Oulanka Research Station, Myyri will develop a work where moods transpire into atmospheres, working directly with micrometeorological data from the fragile subarctic ecosystem. The resulting new piece will be featured in the Adaptation exhibition at the Oulu Art Museum in October 2026.
The artist lives and works in Amsterdam (NL), where he graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie. His work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibition settings at venues such as LINZ FMR (AT), NEVERNEVERLAND (NL), PuntWG (NL), Het Nieuwe Instituut (NL), Uncut at the Stedelijk Museum (NL) and Noblesse Collection (KR). Oulu is the European Capital of Culture for the year 2026. Adaptation is part of the Oulu2026 cultural programme and explores cultural climate change.
