NORDTING – The Northen Assembly is a people’s parliament, a party for the periferia and a separatist movement in the Arctic Area, which brings people of Oulu together to discuss hot topics. The performance, open for everyone, brings up the topics surrounding Oulu and the whole Northern Osthobothnia region and lets the participants vote in their own favour.
The platform has been created by artist Amund Sjølie Sveen, raised in Vadsø, Norway, whose work has for many years focused on the narratives and power struggles in and of the north, taking the North as a starting point for investigating both local and international political questions in our globalized world of market economy. The name of Nordting is a reference to Stortinget, the Parliament of Norway, and the themes of the performance often are around geopolitics, the environmental crisis and local challenges in the North.
NORDTING is organized as a part of Photo North – Northern Photographic Centre’s project Adaptation. The exhibition Adaptation – Time Is Not On Our Side: Towards Possible Futures is seen at Oulu Art Museum from 16.10.2026 to 14.2.2027. Adaptation is a part of the official programme of the European Capital of Culture 2026.
NORDTING is brought to Oulu by The Finnish-Norwegian Cultural Institute FINNO and Photo North – Northern Photographic Centre. The Finnish-Norwegian Cultural Institute creates and promotes sustainable connections between arts and cultural practitioners working in Finland, Norway and Sápmi. NORDTING’s visit to Oulu is a part of FINNO’s NORD-program, which goal is to strengthen the collaboration and networks among Northern Norway, Northern Finland and Sápmi.
Photo North – Northern Photographic Centre promotes and develops photographic art and culture in the region. The centre organises exhibitions of Finnish and international photographic art. In addition to the exhibitions Photo North – Northern Photographic Centre organises and coordinates photography workshops, seminars and various projects exploring photographic art. Photo North’s two galleries and a photobook library can be found in the centre of Oulu at Cultural Centre Valve. Photo North is also one of the founders of Nordic Photography Network (est. 2012). The Network meets actively and develops the field on the whole Nordic level.
