Adaptation – Time is not on our side, towards possible futures focuses on major global changes and their local impact. The project ponders how ecological, social, cultural and technological changes are occurring in the Arctic Circle and Europe – and what new perspectives and strategies we need to adopt as we adapt to inevitable change. Who or what should adapt: humans or nature? Who eventually lays out the rules?
During Adaptation, residencies for artists and scientists will be held at Oulanka Research Station (Kuusamo), KulttuuriKauppila Art Centre (Ii) and Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory (Sodankylä) and a research- and developement laboratory (at Oulanka Research Station). The main exhibition will be held at the Oulu Art Museum from 16.10.2026 to 14.2.2027.
Adaptation is done in collaboration with Oulanka Research Station of the University of Oulu, the Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory of the University of Oulu, the KulttuuriKauppila Art Center, Street Level Photoworks, the Oulu Art Museum, Waag Society and Project Atol.
The project will develop artistic, social, scientific, human and non-human activities and cooperation in 2024–2027. The project is funded by the Oulu Cultural Foundation and the Kone Foundation. The project is a continuation of the international research project More-than-Planet, which was implemented in 2022–2025, and was awarded Creative Europe funding under program code No 101056238 and national matching funds from the City of Oulu and the Finnish National Board of Education.
